Small Porch Styling For Spring
On our small porch tour, I’ll share our double front doors with matching wreath makeovers. Plus I’m sharing my simple ideas for adding spring color with plants and flowers.
Spring Wreath Makeovers
These wreaths started out last spring covered in a variety of bright green mosses. Then for summer I added faux ivy. For fall I removed the ivy and added acorns, mini pinecones and dried stems. You can definitely say I like to recycle my wreaths.
Now I’m stripping the wreaths back down to the moss and adding faux puss willow branches.
For each grapevine wreath I’m using three long branches, and removing the stems with wire cutters. This allows me to wedge the individual stems into the grapevine wreath form. Where needed, I’m wrapping floral wire around the wreath to secure the stems in place.
A few fresh pieces of deer moss, attached with hot glue, helps to brighten up the wreaths. All that’s left is adding matching ticking striped bows in navy and creamy white.
I’m loving how well the moss and pussy willow wreaths show up on our dark metal doors. You can even see them from the street!
Plants And Flowers For Color
As you can see with double front doors there’s only a small area on the right side with enough space for decorating. I’m using large planter and pots of different sizes to create interesting levels. It’s like stair stepping without the steps, and it really works for small porch styling like ours.
For height I’m starting with an urn planter. Would you believe we have been using this urn for almost 20 years? I gave it a fresh coat of Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint in graphite two years ago, and it’s still looking pretty good.
If you’re not sure what plants to put in your planter go with the plant formula of spiller, filler, thriller.
- Spiller is the ivy which cascades over the sides of the planter. I’m so happy the ivy made it through winter and is putting out lots of new spring growth. One less plant to buy this spring LOL!
- Filler is colorful flowering impatiens. These are shade loving plants that will fill in nicely in the coming weeks adding lots of colorful blooms.
- Thriller is a Boston fern or I should say, will be the thriller. By summer it will double in size, looking lush and full.
Creating a mid-level of color and interest to the porch is a pot of caladiums with green and white polka dot plants. Caladiums are one of my favorite plants, and I love their crazy heart shaped leaves.
On the bottom level is another Boston fern, that I’ll be repotting as soon as I make it back to the nursery for a larger container. I’m having to water it every other day, and I can tell it’s already needing more room to grow.
Outdoor Lantern
I love seeing porches with lanterns. Don’t you? I’m trying out this oversized lantern again to see if I can make it work on the porch.
Last year the lantern was on the other side of the porch, but it kept getting in the way, so I removed it. I’m thinking as long as I keep it nestled in the grouping of potted plants it may just work. What do you think?

Remember when picking out plants, it’s good to do a little research on the best plants for the zone where you live. All of plants I’m using do well in shady areas, and with regular watering will withstand our Texas summer heat.
