How To Make A Bench Slipcover

I have a simple tutorial on how to make a bench slipcover with a few shortcuts you might appreciate. After working on our master bedroom refresh, I was motivated to move this project to the top of my to-do list. To see the post click on Updating A Bedroom With Patterns.

Replacing the worn bench with a new design would be nice but not a high priority. I would rather spend money in other places, and coming up with an inexpensive solution is always a fun challenge.

The bench works great for storage but is showing its age and thread bare spots. My best solution is to slipcover the whole piece.

How To Make A Bench Slipcover

The first step was taking measurements. When ever I make slipcovers I add a couple of inches to the overall size for seam allowances. The excess fabric can be trimed once it’s all pinned together.

My big time saver starts with a large canvas drop cloth, that way the amount of fabric isn’t an issue. The slipcover is made from two panels of fabric. That’s it!

The first panel is long enough to wrap around all four sides of the bench with a little extra for a front pleat. I also took advantage of the outside edge that already had a hem.

Not having to create a hem or corner seams is a huge time saver.

The second panel is a rectangular piece for the top. Again I added a few inches to the length and width. Once the the two pieces were pinned together I trimmed off the extra fabric.

When sewing the two panels together, I slightly rounded the corners for a casual fit. I love adding fun little details on all my slipcovers. Did you notice the navy and cream ribbon? On this one, I added four pieces of ribbon to the inside of the pleat securing it with fabric glue.

The ribbon only adds a small detail and I know that barely shows but I like it.
