Updating a bedroom with patterns may sound easy, but for me it was a bit of a challenge. When I decorate, it’s with longevity in mind. Such as using solid colors that are easily changed with seasonal accessories. It’s a good plan, but sometimes I really need to get out of my decorating comfort zone and have fun.
When it comes to decorating, do you have a comfort zone? Do you always pick the same neutral colors over and over? What about patterns, to scary to think about? Well, believe it or not, I’m right there with you.
I realize these colors and patterns may not be your cup of tea, but these simple suggestions might help you break out of a decorating rut too.
Updating A Bedroom With Patterns
As I was switching out the heavy bedding for spring and summer, I realized this is my chance to update our bedroom with patterns and new colors.
Consider these three simple ideas when breaking out of your comfort zone.
- Color and pattern
- Use what you have
- Mix styles
Color And Pattern
Of course I’m passionate about navy and white, but I love lots of other colors too. In my search it was the bright yellow, turquoise and olive green colors that caught my attention in a patchwork quilt. The crazy mix of florals fit right in with the ticking striped headboard slipcover.
For more information see the post Headboard Slipcover.
How do you mix patterns and colors? I like using the formula of combining an organic print such as a floral, with a stripe and a geometric pattern.
Use What You Have
Since I’m always thinking about the household budget, I like to borrow furniture and accessories from other rooms. For months I’ve been thinking about what to hang over the headboard. Problem solved. My grandmothers Limoges china plate depicting quail, keeps company with two everyday white dishes from of my kitchen cabinet.
An easy way to repeat that funny green color in the quilt, was adding the vintage china plate. Stripe patterns are also repeated with a French grain sack pillow and a wide stripe throw at the foot of the bed.
Don’t forget to use floral arrangements to repeat accent colors. These Β yellow roses are real deal but silk orchids in a pretty bowl would be a lovely addition.
Switch out lamps, trays and art work to bring in additional color combinations. Use a desk or bookshelf as a side table or an ottoman at the foot of the bed. Β Just a few suggestions.
Mixing Styles
Part of mixing styles is using what you have in different ways. A modern curvy lamp, an empire style table and an Asian inspired stool are definitely a mix of styles on this side of the bed. I moved the stool in here to add another pattern, plus the gray blue colors work with the ticking headboard cover.
Try an eclectic mix of new furniture with antiques or vintage pieces. Painted furniture is an easy way to add color or simplify decor by painting it white.

As it turns out updating a bedroom with patterns was a fun way to break out of my decorating comfort zone and I’m really enjoying the change. The happy colors and floral patterns are a welcome sight.
