Sometimes maintenance projects are only exciting when you’re finished, and can step back and enjoy the results. This weekend’s project involved updating the hand rails on the stairs with fresh paint that matches the front door. In a previous post, Curb Appeal, I featured the front door with the color Iron Ore from Sherwin-Williams. I’m still in love with the color and now have an opportunity to use it inside the house on the stairs hand rail.
Since I don’t expect anyone else to share in my enthusiasm of watching paint dry, I’m showing one of my tricks that made the painting process go quickly. To prevent having to clean up drips and to make the painting go faster, I use plastic wrap to protect the carpet and painters tape along the bottom edge of the hand rail.

- Sherwin-Williams indoor – outdoor flat finish paint in Iron Ore
- Good quality angled paint brush to cut in edges
- Press-n-seal plastic wrap to protect wood work and carpet from drips
- Frog tape used as a quick paint guide for a clean edge and to protect the carpet around the stair posts.
- Paint bucket featuring a built-in magnet to hold the paint brush on the inside edge and an easy to use handle on the side
The old paint was chipped and scratched, but not rough enough to need sanding. The only prep work required was cleaning the hand rails with an all-purpose cleaner and a cloth to remove oils that had built up on the surface.
With the paint side by side you will notice a big difference between the two colors. Iron ore is more than dark gray. It’s what I would call a soft black.
I’ve only used it in small doses here and on the front door, but I think it would look amazing in a larger space. I recently found on Pinterest a couple of photos using black paint on shiplap walls. Wouldn’t this color be perfect on shiplap? When I find a spot to do that, you will be the first to know!
Covering the worn black finish with fresh paint was way over due. The updated soft color of iron ore, gives the traditional hand rails an unexpected modern kick. Just what this house needed and now I can step back and enjoy the results.
