I love creating summer vignettes. Better yet I love creating summer vignettes with items I can pull out of the cupboard. Well I did buy the flowers at the market, but after a challenging work week, I needed something happy to look at in the shopping cart.
Since homemade ice-cream is on the menu this weekend, I thought I would gather the dishes I would need for dessert and then remembered this ancient looking ice-cream scoop. No telling how old this thing is, but it still works. Before I knew it, I had a smart-looking vignette for the kitchen table.
Let’s see how the vignette came together. I started with a galvanized tray, added a pretty kitchen towel and a glass pitcher of flowers. Then I arranged spoons and napkins in a glass, tucking it behind the flowers. Next came the plates and bowls. The last item and star of the vignette was the ancient looking ice-cream scoop.

Tucked behind the pitcher of flowers is a plain glass holding cloth napkins and silver spoons. Don’t worry if everything doesn’t match. The napkins, bowls and plates are various shades of white but they still work.
After creating the ice-cream vignette, I started thinking. If I can make a centerpiece from a tray of dishes and pitcher full of flowers, what else can I pull out of the cupboards? I started stacking up mixing bowls, bottles, dog treats and other good junk I had on hand.
In this kitchen vignette I used a white ironstone pitcher with utensils instead of flowers, a stack of brightly colored mixing bowls and an old milk bottle with fresh basil. The colors are fun and playful.
The chicken cake mold is almost as interesting as the ice-cream scoop. It was my grandmothers. I’ve never baked a cake in it, but I love having it out on display. Instead of flowers, I added a green plant and a jar of dog treats. Simple and fun!
The last vignette also features the aluminum chicken cake mold, mixing bowls and of course the crazy happy flowers from the market. Hiding in the blue and white speckled mixing bowl is a little collection of cookie cutters.
Helpful tip: Iron your kitchen towel before adding it to your tray or basket to give it a fresh crisp look.
