Today I’m sharing some easy ways to create a festive red and green Christmas porch. I’ll show you how to create a beautiful display on a small porch with real and faux winter greenery, and holiday accents of red plaid.

This is the first Christmas I have decorated our porch with the new front doors. Our old single door with highlights on each side was literally disintegrating before our eyes, so we decided to replace it, choosing metal double doors.

Of course I’m still loving the new look, and enjoying the challenge of decorating not one, but two doors as the seasons roll around.

Decorating our small porch is not as big of a challenge as it once was, because with each new holiday I’m learning a few more tricks. We can still create a beautiful display, but we have to scale it down a bit, and decorate vertically instead of horizontally.

Festive Red and Green Christmas Porch

Believe if or not, red is not one of my favorite colors to decorate with indoors, but outdoors is another matter. It makes a happy holiday accent color with our dark front doors, especially when it is red plaid!

I can’t think of a better combination for our Christmas porch than red plaid ribbon with winter greenery.

Christmas Porch Planter

Don’t you just love all the Christmas planter ideas that are all over Pinterest right now? I sure do, but I never thought about giving our planter a makeover until this year.

I usually ignore our planter during the winter months, occasionally watering the ivy to keep it alive. This year is a whole new story as they say.

If you’re thinking you want to create the same look, I’ll tell you how easy this Christmas planter comes together.

By the way this is a before photo of the planter. The ivy still looks healthy and surprisingly the Boston fern is hanging in there, even though we have dipped below freezing several times. All I had to do to get it ready was remove some of the unhealthy and dead stems.

How To Create A Christmas Planter

First, forage or buy fresh pine and cedar clippings, then after trimming the stems, push them directly into the soil in the planter. Keep adding your clippings around the edge and center until it is as full as you like.

Second, add real or faux berry picks, a few pinecones and a large red plaid bow. Be sure to add water and keep the soil moist so the clippings will stay as fresh as possible.

The berry picks I found were an orangey red and seemed to compete with with my red plaid ribbon. So I used some brown spray paint that I had in the garage to tone them down a little.

Some of the bright red still shows, but the berries and ribbon coordinate much better now.

One thing I’m really loving about this festive planter, is how well the winter greenery mixes with the fern fronds and cascading ivy. What do you think?

In a smaller arrangement, I’m using all the left over clippings and another of the large pinecones. To create this look, use a small water tight container inside a larger container to hold water and the clippings.

Festive Red And Green Christmas Wreaths

Two doors means twice the fun, right? I’m using faux cedar wreaths that look amazingly real, especially with the pinecones. With the addition of red plaid bows, these wreaths are all set.

I expect to use these wreaths for several years, and they should be easy to change up with different picks or ribbons. I’m already trying to picture how they will look next year. LOL!

Festive Red and Green Faux Pine Garland

Adding the garland is almost as easy as hanging the wreaths on the doors. I’m using Command Hooks to secure three 9 foot garlands.

Pine garlands look festive all on their own, however the addition of the red plaid ribbon really makes them stand out. The garlands also have lights on timers so our porch looks so pretty at night.

One thing I didn’t think about decorating is the light fixture. Should I add a garland or create a swag for it? I’m open to suggestions!
