Family Room Refresh With Winter Decor
I’m the kind of person that has a hard time letting go of Christmas decor. So as soon as I reluctantly put away the holiday storage bins, I start decluttering and basically go into a cleaning frenzy.
Once the cleaning and organizing is out of the way, I start the transition into winter decorating. It’s the best way I know of, to avoid the emptiness of how the house can feel after the holidays.
If you feel that way too, then we can jump into winter decorating together. Here’s a little bit of what I’m focusing on to cozy up the family room.

Winter Decor On The Mantel
The mantel is usually where I begin, and a spot I can add as much or as little decor as I wish. Starting with a clean slate, I’m adding some faux greenery to one side, with a rosemary topiary, a mini cedar tree and of course books.
For a wintery mix, I’m adding tiny pinecones to the tall topiary to cover the base of the tree. I love the textural interest they provide as well as the preserved moss on the base of the cedar tree. These little trees are so versatile, I’m thinking you might want to make one too.

On the other side of the mantel I have some thrifted brass candle sticks, a few more books and an antler shed. It’s not exactly minimalist but it a clean look I’m loving right now.
By the way, I recently bought some battery operated candle sticks, which I never thought I would do. Now that I have them, I’m kicking myself for not buying some sooner.
There just something about candles, that always make a space seem more cozy. Plus, with a touch of a button we have soft flickering lighting, and I don’t have to worry about burning the house down. 😊
winter coffee Table styling and Fresh Greenery
My winter coffee table styling is concentrating on the power of three. Decorating with an odd number of objects is something I haven’t talked about in a long time, but it’s a decorating concept I’m always practicing.
The first item is a brass bowl, holding an antler and lots of pinecones for a contrast in texture. I use antlers through out the year, because I love their natural beauty and their connection to nature.
Talking about the outdoors, I just couldn’t resist the second item on the coffee table which is a candle in a green ceramic dish. The woodsy scent of this candle reminds me of long relaxing walks in the country and fresh mountain air.
The third item is a simple arrangement of a magnolia branch in a vase, sitting on a stack of books. The magnolia tree in our back yard is a dwarf variety, so the leaves are small and don’t overwhelm the size of the vase. For a similar look, you can try this faux fig branch.

My larger plants are back in the family room taking the place of the Christmas tree. I’m very happy with how healthy they look after spending a couple of month upstairs. It’s like they were on vacation and glad to be back home again.
Creating Cozy Winter Decor With Pillows And Throws
I think we can all agree that pillows and throws are the key to cozy comfort. Our new sofa is very comfortable, but it looks so much more inviting with fluffy pillows and soft throw blankets.
By switching the pillows from the living room to the family room I have a whole new look. These neutral shades create a soft color pallet that works for me this time year.
During the winter months we often having a fire going, and it nice to have throw blankets too for chilly evenings.
Here’s another tip that will not cost you a dime. Designers are always telling us to move furniture away from the walls, which will help make a space seem more interesting and therefore more inviting. It can also enhance the conversation areas, and makes a room feel more cozy.
Have you ever tried it? Well I did. The sofa is now about 18 inches away from the wall of windows, and the corner chair is now about a foot closer to the coffee table. It’s like instant coziness. You gotta try it!
