Today I’m sharing an easy DIY walnut wreath project. The best part of making this little wreath is that I can enjoy it now and through the winter holidays. I love using walnuts, pecans and hazel nuts in my holiday decorating, and I enjoy finding different ways to use them every year.

Do you ever wake up and say I want to make something today? Me too, of course nothing happens until I have a cup of coffee in hand.
Saturday morning I was in a creative mood after thinking about making this little wreath. I had everything I needed, except craft wire, and I didn’t want to go shopping. What I needed was a wire hanger…problem solved…
Well a few years ago, I went through a Mommy Dearest phase, and I got rid of our wire hangers. The ones left are from the dry cleaners for Mister’s dress shirts. The problem is that they are all white, and I need a regular brown one. Lucky me, I found the last one in existence in the back of the closet. What a treasure!
Why the obsession over the the color of the wire? Simple, the brown wire is not as noticeable, between the walnuts as a white one would be.
Easy DIY Walnut Wreath
The only tricky part of this project is drilling holes in the walnuts. Once that is complete the project goes really fast. In fact it took longer to take photos, than it did to make the wreath.
Supplies
- walnuts
- wire
- needle nose pliers
- drill or Dremel tool and drill bit
- micro hand clamps
- ribbon
Instructions
Drill a hole through each walnut. I’m using 16 walnuts to make a wreath and have a few left over to start another one. It’s good to have extra walnuts, because some of them will crack and break.
If you are using a coat hanger for the wire like I am, then straighten out the hanger and use wire cutters as needed.
Slip the walnuts over the wire. Leave about an inch and a half of wire on each side, then bend wire with pliers to create a hook to join both ends.
Use ribbon to cover the wire. Tie ribbon into a bow and trim the ends. Satin ribbon makes a pretty contrast to the the rough texture of the walnuts.
I plan on making a few more wreaths, now that I have my prototype. By the way, I highly recommend using a Dremel tool for a project like this one. It is much easier to hold than a big drill.
In addition, I also recommend using micro hand clamps to hold the walnuts while drilling the holes. It’s a safer way to hold the walnut and protect your fingers from the drill bit.
Shop Supplies
For now I’m displaying the walnut wreath next to the secretary desk above two ironstone platters. It’s a very simple way to add a bit of interest to this corner of the room. What do you think?
