Today I’m sharing a simple DIY plaid fall wreath with autumn colors. A wreath is an easy way to bring fall decor into any room or welcome guest at the front door. Can you believe the first day of autumn is only a week away? Of course it will still feel like late summer where I live, but hey a girl can still dream and decorate!
I started decorating for fall several weeks ago doing a little at a time around the house, and now I’m working on wreaths. This cute black and white plaid wreath is for indoors only. Our small porch does little to block the elements, so I’m careful with what I display on the front door.
My fall decorating so far this year is mostly in neutral tones, but I’m ready to mix in some orange, yellow and gold. It must be the cooler mornings that are making me crave those cozier autumn colors. Yep, bring on those flannel throws!
DIY Plaid Fall Wreath With Autumn Colors
Before starting any project I usually rummage through my craft supplies to see what I can use. A yard of black and white plaid flannel that was going to be a pillow last year, is this year’s wreath. Please tell me you do that sort of thing too LOL!
Supplies For A Fall Wreath
- plaid flannel fabric
- wire or foam wreath form
- scissors
- mix of fall floral and leaf picks
- ribbon
- floral wire or rubber band
I’m really big on reusing my wreath forms, so I try not to use hot glue if I can get away with it. Note, you can make this wreath on a foam or wire form.
Start by cutting fabric into strips. My fabric strips are about 5 inches wide. I’m using the lines in the plaid pattern as a cutting guide, which makes cutting straight lines much easier.
Wrap fabric around the wire form scrunching and tucking in the ends as you go. To cover a 12 inch wire wreath I ended up using 5 strips of fabric that are about 45 inches long.
The last two strips of fabric are tied into a knot. This saves me from having to add a bow.
I’m only using three of the fall floral picks that you see in the photo but they all have different textures. One of the picks had red berries, but I decided to cut those out using scissors. Just something to remember when buying floral picks that you remove or add foliage to suit your needs.
Instead of hot gluing the fall picks in place, I’m simply grouping them together and securing them with a rubber band. Floral wire will also work or even a small zip tie.
To cover stems I’m wrapping them with some ribbon and tying it in a knot.
The last step is to wedge the fall pick behind the knot. It’s sung enough not to fall out of place.
Displaying an Autumn Plaid wreath
This little chalkboard next to the kitchen is one of my favorite places to display a seasonal wreath or garland.
Sometimes I use a clear hook on the chalkboard for hanging a wreath, and sometimes I use a ribbon. It all depends on the type of wreath. In this case I’m using a ribbon over the top of the chalkboard frame and securing it on the back.
The dark background of the chalkboard really helps the plaid flannel stand out as well as the autumn leaves. I love how this little pop of autumn color looks when walking through this short hallway.
