DIY Pewter Mirror Frame

My DIY pewter mirror frame project is almost as good as a rags-to-riches story. The frame was undeniably a keeper with classic details and a good size. I’ve saved this mirror for the longest time with the hopes of updating the finish. In addition to updating the frame, I also needed to correct a few damaged spots but wanted to use something other than paint.

If you’ve priced mirrors lately, you know they can be very expensive. For less than ten dollars, my old mirror was transformed from a dark gold to a sophisticated pewter finish.

The secret to the new look is a product call Rub’n Buff and it’s available in a variety of metallic colors. I usually lean towards silver rather than gold finishes, and that’s why I picked pewter.

Here’s a list of supplies I used to complete the project.

Supplies

Rub’n Buff
Painters tape
Paint brush
Paint sponge
Cotton cloth

I used a paint brush to work the metallic wax into tight areas and then used a paint sponge for the large smooth areas. The wax goes on very thin and dries quickly which allows you to build up layers as need for coverage.

Applying two coats of wax took less than two hours. Once the wax had been applied, I waited about thirty minutes before buffing the finish with a cotton cloth. The soft luster of the metallic finish is truly gorgeous.

As always follow the package directions carefully. This product should be used in a well ventilated area.

I left some of the old finish in the groves and crevices for character and interest. It also gives the frame a rustic time-worn look of an old pewter candle stick or bowl.

With the mirror frame project complete, I couldn’t wait to embellish it with a simple holiday swag and a few sprigs of holly from the back yard. This project has put me in a festive mood and now I’m ready to decorate the house for Christmas.

The swag was created by tying ribbons to silver cup handles using various lengths of ribbon. To mount it to the mirror I gathered the ribbons and tied a knot on the end. Then I slipped the knot over a small hook on the back side of the frame.
