I’m so happy with how my DIY patriotic fabric scrap flags turned out. These are no sew flags, which makes them very easy to create. Once you gather your supplies, you can make them in less than an hour. Just the kind of project I like.

I have been looking forward to making scrap flags for the longest time. With summer almost upon us, I’ll be needing a little bit of red, white and blue for tablescapes and the front porch.
Here’s a list of supplies you’ll need, and hopefully you’ll have most of it already on hand.
Supplies
- fabric scraps in red, white and blue
- string in blue and white or red and white
- scissors
- hot glue or craft glue
- sticks or dowels
DIY Patriotic Fabric Scrap Flags
I’m making flags that are two sided so they will look good from either side, and I can use them in arrangements. This is completely optional, so you can decide on what you like best.
The fabric I’m using for this project is a combination of gingham remnants and some old dish towels.
First tear or cut your fabric into the size you want. I’m using pieces that are about 12″ wide x 5″ long for the main part of the flag. The smaller section for the upper left corner are about 7″ wide x 2½” long.
Lay your red and white fabric flat and place the dowel in the center with about an inch sticking out past the fabric at the top. Add a line of glue on all four sides, making sure you have glue on the dowel too. Then fold the fabric over the dowel so the two sides stick together.
If you not good at eyeing the center of the fabric, just measure and make a mark with a pen. I kind of overthought the process thinking I needed to fold and iron my fabric scraps. It’s completely unnecessary, but you can do that too if you wish.
Now glue the blue and white fabric on top of the red and white fabric. Note you will need to glue the blue and white fabric to front and the back of the flag.
The last step is adding your red or blue string to the top of the flag. Easy peasy, and now you have patriotic fabric scrap flags for your summer holiday decorating.
By the way the dowels I’m using are actually four 30″ marshmallow roasting sticks that I cut in half. I also cut off the pointed ends so they would all match. They were in a special s’mores display at the grocery store. You just never know where you will find craft supplies these days LOL!
