Book Page Bird Garland

Making a simple book page bird garland is another fun craft that’s keeping me busy the last few weeks. I’m excited to say I’m painting with watercolors again, and wow I really miss it. Even if I can only paint for short periods, I need projects like this one to relax and let my mind drift.

Are you like that? The creative side of your brain is tapping you on the shoulder saying, “hey give me something to do”. At times mine seems to be in overdrive, which is why I’m sharing more of what I’ve been up to lately.

My bird garland is inspired by all the visitors we have in our back yard coming into the feeders. Song birds are very entertaining this time of year and we also have quite a few magnificent falcons. We saw one swoop down and get a lizard the other day. Poor gecko!

Anyway, since I’m on a roll again with the book page projects, I thought of making a bird garland. For similar ideas see my post How To Make Book Page Botanical Art and DIY Book Page Ghost Garland.

How To Make A Book Page Bird Garland

Trace a simple bird shape on a book page with a pencil. You might be able to get three or four per page, depending on the size of the bird and the book page.

Cut out all the bird shapes and start painting simple designs. Of course you can leave them plain as well.

I like having a variety of spring colors but you can see I like blue flowers best. Some of the doodles are made with a marker and larger areas such as the flowers are filled in by brush.

The last step is creating a garland by attaching the birds to a string or embroidery floss with mini clothes pins.

Do you have a favorite spot for seasonal or holiday decorating? I have three areas which include the mantel, the coat rack in the entry and this little chalkboard by the kitchen. The chalkboard is an easy spot to decorate and when I have room I can add a special quote.

I stumbled across one that you might like too. “The sound of birds stops the noise in my mind”, by Carly Simon.

For a festive touch I’m using blue and white pompom garlands for additional color and texture. I love the way it all came together with the book page bird garland and how it livens up this little space.
