Autumn And Wintry Decorating Ideas

Now that November is here, it’s time to put into action all the cozy autumn and wintry decorating ideas I‘ve been dreaming about. My decor style is clean and classic, so making subtle seasonal changes is simple. All I have to do is switch out pillows, throws, art work and a few of my favorite accessories and then I’m sliding right into the winter mode.

As a way to slow down and enjoy my indoor surroundings, I added an unexpected element in the living room. A bare branch with sparkly glass acorns takes center stage.

The tree branch is nestled in a white urn with crumpled paper to hold the branch in place. I was able to hide the paper from view by adding a layer of wine corks on top. (You never know when wine corks will come in handy, another good reason to enjoy wine.)

Once the tree branch was secured in the urn, I carefully hung acorn glass ornaments with gauzy ribbon. I found the cute acorn ornaments in a local gift shop a few weeks ago. I love the vintage look of the acorns and their whimsical colors.

Have you noticed plaid patterns are trending now for fall and winter? All my most cherished home decorating stores seem to be exploding with plaid this year, and I’m loving it! The plaid throw below is from Pottery Barn. The rich soft colors blend in nicely with my decor, adding to the easy-going and inviting atmosphere I have created.

The living room is one of my favorite spots for reading or working on my laptop computer, mainly because the sofa is extremely comfortable. When I started redecorating a few years ago, I sidestepped the large overstuffed furniture, choosing instead a tailored piece with narrow arms.  If you want your rooms to look more spacious, the scale of the furniture is an important consideration.

The use of trays is one of my favorite decorating ideas to share. I use trays all over the house, but this one has become a year round fixture on the living room coffee table. Think of trays as a way to corral and tame your accessories into a cohesive vignette.

When I consider seasonal decorating I also think about artwork. Currently, I’m working on several winter botanical watercolors. I call this new hobby of mine “clip board art” because I display them on a clip board propped on the kitchen counter.

You can create your own art work too by pulling together photos or quotes. If you are looking for art ideas click on Updating A Home Office. My daughter and I put together a smart gallery wall for her home office using watercolor art and quotes that we framed ourselves.

In the family room, I added another plaid throw from Pottery Barn. No doubt we will be fighting over these throws on chilly evenings.

In less than a month, I’ll be decorating for Christmas, so for now I’m keeping most of the accessories very simple and uncluttered.

I hope my decorating schemes will inspire you to add a few wintry touches in your own home. All it takes is a few ideas here or there and you are on your way. Now sit back with a cup of tea or a glass of wine and enjoy your home!

Cheers!
