5 Ways To Mix Metals

Every few years, we see metal finishes in the design world move to the forefront of the trending now status, as they are reinvented. Sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming trying to figure out what trends to follow, and how to use metal finishes in your decor. My best advice is to embrace it all and get in the mix! Here’s my list of five ways to mix metals when decorating a space.

Frames
Lamps and light fixtures
Accessories
Furniture
Hardware

The secret to mixing metals as with most things in decorating is balance. In the living space below the gold leaf frame, polished nickel lamp, pewter bowl and galvanized tray are balanced by the textures of fabrics and organic elements.

I love mixing metals and metal finishes and somehow it all works together, such as the copper accent table and the tin mirror frames.

As you scroll through, keep in mind that metal finishes vary from high polished to antique to rustic, and yes they can all be mixed together.

The galvanized tray may be the first metal you notice but the side table also has a polished nickel lamp, bronze horse and silver rimmed bowl.

The bronze hardware on the media cabinet adds another metal finish into this space even thought it is very subtle. On the other hand, the copper lantern lends a bright accent of color to the dark shelf.

A hammered steel accent table placed next to the sofa not only brings a metal element into the room but also movement with its round shape.

The coffee table with rustic iron legs anchors the space while and a shiny brass bowl reflects light.

Even the wing back chair with bronzed nail head trim, creates a layer of interest to this corner of the room.

Mixing metal finishes is one way to give your home that collected-over-time-feel. As each trend rolls around, don’t panic and think that you have to replace what you have. Instead add an element or two and let you decor evolve or time.
