Over the years, I’ve drifted more and more to a neutral color palate when selecting furniture and paint colors. I find neutral colors are easy to live with, easy to accessorize and easy to change-up seasonally. Are you leaning in that direction too? Then I have four easy ways to keep neutral decor interesting to help you.
Texture is one of the best ways to add interest to a room. Think of textures that you can see as well as touch. Select fabrics with a distinct weave or finish, such as linen and velvet. In addition to fabrics, think about all the textures we get from natural elements. Here’s a list of a few favorites…
- Fabric covered trays
- Natural wood furniture
- Rustic metals
- Fabric book covers
- Seagrass and sisal rugs
Contrast and balance
Vary the neutral colors for contrast. It can be bold with black and white or subtle with neutral tones such as the pillows on the sofa below. When I scroll through Pinterest or flip through magazines, I’m always attracted to the photos that have a pleasing balance of light and dark. If you catch yourself doing that too, then a neutral decor maybe what you’re looking for.
Add a splash of color or pattern into the room with accessories. In this room the multitude of colors and lively patterns of the Persian rug create movement and interest. I can pull any color from this rug and use as it an accent color.
- Throw blankets
- Art Work
A little pop of green will bring life into a room. Of course I prefer flowers, but my faithful little plants never disappoint me. A touch of nature is a good thing. Try flowering plants too.
- Peace Lily
Remember your four easy ways to keep neutral decor interesting. Have a great weekend and happy decorating!

Good Morning Michelle…like you, I am really drifting towards neutral. You have so much more flexibility in what you can use in your home decor with more neutral colors. I love that brown velvet chair!!!
Have a great day my friend.

Thanks Lynn! You’re right flexibility is the key. I’m already thinking about possible spots that I can add a spring color or two. Have a great week!
