Thanksgiving Centerpiece

The perfect pumpkin decorated with bittersweet.

When I spied bundles of Bittersweet at the market, I instantly forgot everything I had previously planned for a Thanksgiving centerpiece.  I happily snatched up the branches, knowing they would look lovely on the table. The red berries with their yellow leaf jackets are simply gorgeous, and as it turned out, the highlight of the table this year. As an added bonus, I even had enough to decorate the chandelier.

When I decorate for Thanksgiving I gravitate towards earthy rustic colors for the centerpiece and keep the place settings simple. Normally my photography is not this dark, but I wanted to share with you how candle light enhances the textures and shapes of the centerpiece.

The key to creating a simple arrangement is eliminating clutter. In the center of the table is a big Cinderella pumpkin with tons of character in shades of green and orange. It makes the perfect platform for draping branches of Bittersweet.

To finish the tablescape, I carefully spaced votive candles around but not too close to the branches. The candle light adds a beautiful glow to the rich warm tones of the wood, creating little shadows that dance around the pumpkin.

Did you noticed the votive candle holders and the wine glasses are mis-matched?  Don’t worry if you don’t have enough of one style, just mix what you have on hand.

I do recommend using unscented candles, so that different scents don’t complete with the meal. Last but not least, never leave candles unattended.

I’m so excited about Thanksgiving this year. We’re actually having more than six at our table, so I’ll be expanding the seating to accommodate more. I hope our family and friends are looking forward to gathering as much as I am. The sharing of old stories and great food is hard to beat!

Cheers!
