If you like creating your own tree decorations then you’ll love these ribbon and ticking Christmas ornaments. I plan on decorating our tree this weekend, but I just can’t wait to share these with you. Everyone seems anxious for the holidays this year and I suppose I am too, so let’s get started.

The motivation for making ribbon and ticking ornaments is the need for shatter-proof tree decorations. Our grandson will be turning two very soon, and I think we’ll all enjoy the tree more knowing we don’t have to worry about glass ornaments breaking on the floor.
How To Make Ribbon And Ticking Christmas Ornaments
So many of the shatter-proof ornament balls that you can buy in bulk, look fine from a distance, but up close look too much like plastic. Until I can find some that I really love, I’ll be making my own.
Today I’m sharing three batches of ornaments, just to give you an idea of how easy it is to come up with your own look.
Supplies
- styrofoam balls
- straight pins
- ribbon 3/8″
- ticking fabric
- thin cording
- scissors
- hot glue gun and glue sticks
- extra embellishments such as faux greenery, berries or pinecones
Wrap each styrofoam ball with ribbon or torn fabric strips covering it completely. I like using straight pins to help keep the ribbon in place until I can add a few dots of hot glue.
Make a hanger for the ornament by tying a knot in cording or ribbon and hot glue on top. Add embellishments such as bows or leave them plain.
It will take about 4 yards of the 3/8 inch wide ribbon to cover a 2.8 inch or 3 inch ball.
To make ticking ornaments, tear fabric in 1 inch strips, then follow the same steps above. It will take about 6 yards of fabric strips to cover a 6 inch ball.
The fun part of this project is picking out the ribbon. I used twill, velvet and satin ribbon, but I have to admit satin takes a bit of patients to work with because it slips.
This little project is a great way to use up left over scraps of ribbon you might have, and who knows what color combinations you can come up with.
