Laundry Refresh And A Free Printable

Today I’m sharing some simple ideas for a laundry room refresh and a free printable. This laundry room refresh project, starts with replacing damaged floor molding and adding a new coat of paint on the cabinets.

Tackling small repairs are just part of the normal maintenance every home needs. The shoe molding around the sink cabinet was awful looking. Over time, little spills from the dog water bowl caused the laminated moulding to peel and discolor. Time for a quick repair.

I didn’t realize how many different types of molding there were, until I walked down the trim and molding aisle at my local home improvement store. Their staff was so patient with my endless questions, and now I have a better understanding of why a builder would choose laminated molding. It cuts just like wood, it’s quick to install and it doesn’t require paint. That’s great, but for our needs, it doesn’t work.

The replacement molding I purchased instead is primed wood molding made of pine. It will be much more durable for the accidents that seem to happen in our house. I also purchased a trim removal kit while I was there, to add to my handy tool collection.

How To Replace Shoe Molding

First, I removed the old molding using the large trim lever bar and a hammer. It took a few heavy hits with a hammer but soon it came loose from the cabinet. For the molding on the front of the cabinet, I used the curved part of the bar to get behind the molding because of the limited space to work in.

Next using the old laminated molding as a guide, I cut two pieces of wood molding with a miter box and saw.

Before installing the wood molding, I used a drill with a 3/16” drill bit to make pilot holes for the finishing nails. This made hammering the nails through the molding much easier. This step could be omitted if you have a nail gun. 😉 The last step before painting was using caulk to fill in a few spaces.

If you are thinking about starting a repair similar to this, you might need the following supplies.

Refresh Paint and Accessories

After installing the wood molding, I applied a quick coat of paint. Of course I couldn’t stop there and painted the whole sink cabinet and the wall cabinet above. I never realize how much a fresh coat of paint helps the look of a room, until I’m finished. Wow, it looks as good as it did when we first moved in!

Have you noticed how popular Moroccan hand painted tile floors and walls have become on Pinterest? If not, you will soon. I’ve been noticing them more and more in magazines, restaurants, and retail shops.

I don’t have the budget or have the need for a new tile floor, but would love to have the look. I found this cute rug at Target with a medallion tile design in dark gray and white. I think it adds an updated feel to the laundry room.

One last touch, hanging over the dryer is a laundry service notice.  It’s mounted in a brightly colored frame with a glass front and back, letting the wall color show through.  If you would like to have this print for your laundry room, clink on the link below for a free printable.
