Every year in January or February I re-evaluate my storage needs as I’m purging. It’s my way of starting the year fresh and challenging myself to be more organized.

Yesterday, I installed a utility door rack on the inside of the closet door in my studio, so that I could organize the supplies I use most often. Here are a couple of progress photos, so you can ooh and awe when you see the new door rack.
Door Rack Storage Solution
The mesh baskets hang on a central support that is attached to a bracket at the top and bottom of the door. When I want to reorganize, I can move the baskets up or down to accommodate the height of items being stored.
My favorite feature of the door rack is the utility board, which is a kind of pegboard, where small bins and hooks can be attached.
The key here is visual storage. Having tools and supplies in view works best for me and I can rearrange the hanging bins as needed. Visual storage is also very helpful for my significant other. 😉
The door is no longer wasted space and all of these items are at my finger tips.

More Door Rack Storage solution Ideas
I know there are tons of options when it comes to craft storage solutions, but I thought I would share some that have worked great for me.
Stackable Bins
Stackable bins are perfect for organizing all sorts of craft supplies and save space on shelves. I use bins to separate nails, screws, hooks, embroidery thread, ribbon, yarn and small tools.
I use the same type of bins under my kitchen sink for organizing cleaning supplies, brushes and sponges.
Baskets With Lids
Large baskets with lids are also great for stacking on shelves. I use these for paints, brushes, sandpaper, markers and pencils.
Shelving
A few years ago I removed the 24″ deep built in closet shelves and installed 12″ deep adjustable wire shelves. Believe it or not, the storage space has tripled. This is now a walk in closet with available wall space that can be used for additional storage.
Wall Racks
Spice racks are not just for the kitchen. Their slender profiles don’t take up much space between the shelves and the door way. Talk about a craft storage solution for paints and waxes. This is perfect!

Storage Tower
When thinking about storage go with vertical shelves to save on floor space.
The rolling bookshelf is one of my more practical purchases because of its versatility. It has casters so I can move it into a closet, bathroom, laundry room, kitchen or garage if my storage needs change.
Filing Cabinets
Obviously the three drawer filing cabinets are for filing and storage, but I also use them as an additional work space for projects and photo shoots.
