While doing a quick reconnoiter through a local antique mall, I rescued a charming cafe chair with a cane seat. The finish on the chair however, was far from being considered charming.
Cane Chair Rescue
After cleaning off the grime and painting the chair with a chalk type paint in a creamy white, I was faced with the question of what to do with the cane seat. Should I paint or leave the cane in its natural color?
The brilliant solution was Liming Wax.
On the right side, the cane seat is in its natural color on the left the liming wax was applied. I love the subtle difference and how the liming wax allows the cane seat to blend in with the paint.
The application was quick and easy using a brush to work the liming wax into the cracks and crevices of the cane. After the liming wax was applied, I lightly buffed the seat with a cotton cloth.
The results are simply beautiful.
Liming wax is typically used on unfinished or painted furniture to bring out the wood grain. Using it on the woven cane was essentially the same. The liming wax highlighted the character lines giving the woven pattern definition.
The liming wax was definitely the key in giving an ordinary cane chair a sophisticated look. I’m looking forward to exploring more ways of using it. Check out a previous project using the Amy Howard One Step Paint, in the Painted Metal Tray post.
