If you look closely, you’ll notice this gingerbread house tablescape is created with paper mache house boxes. When I first thought about creating this tablescape I imaged how fun it would be for a kids table at Christmas, but now I’m thinking it would probably be appreciated more by big kids like me.
I’m completely spell-bound when it comes to real gingerbread houses that are lavishly decorated all over with white icing. The memorizing mix of swirls, scallops, spirals, and zigzags is so magical.

For this tablescape instead of baking and constructing real gingerbread houses use paper mache house boxes. I’m not sure if my icing decorating skills will ever develop but I can use a paint pen.
Supplies For Gingerbread Houses
On the first house, I penciled in the doors and windows but found it was so much easier to freehand the designs. I knew if I tried to make everything look too perfect it wouldn’t have that made-with-love appeal.
I also figured it would be impossible to make each house look identical, so I varied the style of the roofs, windows, doors and flourishes. Believe it or not, that’s when the real fun started as I tried to add different doodles to each one.
There is no right or wrong way to decorate a gingerbread house, just draw lines, zigzags, dots, circles, squares, scallops, hearts, stars, spirals and triangles. If you mess up, wipe off the chalk with a damp paper towel and start over.
When I started planning out the tablescape I want elements that would say, “It’s Christmas Time”.
Ideas To Create a Gingerbread house Tablescape
- White dishes
- Something plaid
- Mix of silverware
- A playful centerpiece
- Greenery
I used my basic white dishes, a mix of silverware, and for a punch of color used plaid cloth napkins at each setting. You know me, I never get tired of beautiful tartan colors.
For greenery I used a boxwood wreath which was large enough for a white cake stand to sit in the middle.
The centerpiece is just a large glass storage jar filled part way with powdered sugar and a cluster of gingersnap tree cookies. By placing the back sides together, the cookies look pretty from any direction.
Mini white bottle brush trees are scattered around the wreath along with a string of jingle bells.
Now we are ready for a fun dinner!
