Today I’m sharing my DIY French country style heart wreath with non-traditional colors for Valentine’s Day and beyond. The look of a blue and white grain sack type fabric, gives the wreath a bit of a country French feeling that I really love.

This is Pinterest challenge reveal day and creating a Valentine heart wreath is this months project. If you’re new here…every month our wonderful host Cindy of County Road 407, selects an inspiration photo for us to recreate. Each participant puts their own spin on the photo according to our individual style of decorating.
The best part is seeing how everyone interprets the image, and we always have an interesting variety. If you’re stopping by from my My Wee Abode I’m so happy you’re here. Julie is one of my best blogging buddies and always has cute ideas.
One of my favorite Pinterest challenge posts from last year is How To Create A Cozy Reading Nook.
Our craft project this month comes from Sky of Capitol B with a darling Valentine wreath. My take away of Sky’s wreath is the overall delicate look of the wired vine heart shape, and of course the cute paper hearts.
Sky uses a Cricut Maker to create paper hearts which is really motivating me to get one. I love the uniform size and the fun patterns of the hearts.
DIY French Country Style Heart Wreath
My wreath is a little more rustic looking because the heart shapes are cut from a recycled kitchen towel. You read that right!
I bought this kitchen towel from Sur La Table several years ago, because I love the pretty blue color and classic French stripes. Parts of it have stains but there’s enough good fabric for small projects like this one.
Supplies
- naturally wrapped wire vine
- wire cutters
- scissors
- needle and thread
- hot glue gun and glue sticks
- fabric
- poly fill
- ribbon
Making A heart wreath
This is my first time using the naturally wrapped wire vine, and I must say I’m a bit mad at myself for not trying it sooner.
It’s really easy to form into a heart shape by adding a loop at the center top. Then wrap the ends like a vine around the side of the wreath to secure the shape.
Spelling out Love with the same naturally wrapped wire vine gives the wreath more interest, since I’m using fewer hearts on the wreath. To attach a word, name or initial to the wreath create a little loop at both ends of the wire. Then decide where it looks best and tighten the loops around a wreath wire.
Creating French Country Style Hearts
To create the fabric hearts first make a heart shape pattern out of heavy paper or card board.
Trace around the heart shape with a pen a little larger than the pattern. Then cut just inside pen marks so the finished hearts look clean.
Cut out a front and back for each heart. Attach the front to back hearts with a straight or running stitch by hand. Before closing, add a small amount of poly fill or a small cotton ball will work too.
The poly fill gives the hearts definition and enough body to keep their shape for hot gluing to the wreath wire.
The last step is tying a short ribbon to the top of the heart for a hanger.

I’m enjoying my new French country style heart wreath so much, which is currently hanging on the pantry door in our kitchen.

Good morning, Michelle! I love how your heart wreath turned out. I haven’t used the paper wrapped wire before, either. It’s pretty fun that now you can whip something up pretty quickly instead of taking hours making a grapevine wreath. 🙂 It’s darling with the blue and white hearts on it. Love the 3D effect!!
Enjoy your sweet Valentine’s wreath,
Hugs,
Barb 🙂

I LOVE how you spelled out the word “Love” with your grapevine. So clever and cute!
I’d love it if you’d share it at my link party this week, too! Sundays on Silverado!

Shhhh, don’t tell anyone but your wreath is my absolute favorite! The dark vine, the word love, the blue and white puffy hearts – so adorable! This might be the first red thing I use for Valentine’s Day. Unless I can find a pink striped towel. 😉 Thanks for joining in. Pinning and still grinning!

This is such a creative way to put your own spin on things, Michelle! I’m always a fan of ticking, and it adds a nice contrast to the grapevine wire. This hop has opened my mind to the possibilities of using wires like this! Thanks!

Looks like we were thinking along the same lines with the ticking stripe hearts! I love that you made yours out of a dishcloth. And adding “love” in wire-cursive was so darn clever! Well done!
Michelle Meyer says
We sure were thinking along the same lines Michelle and I almost used a coat hanger too. Great minds!! 🙂

I love your blue and white french country versiion, Michelle! Who says Valentines needs to be pink or red; way to think outside of the box and make it your own:) And now you’ve got me thinking about some cute pink and white vintage linen kitchen towels I’ve got; need to make something for Vday with them.
Michelle Meyer says
I was a little tired of all the red after Christmas and so happy using blue and white again. Thanks for the sweet comments Lora!
Paula says
What a great use for a dish towel that has seen better days. The hearts that you made using it are so pretty and it’s fun that you used blue instead of the standard pink or red for Valentine’s Day. My favorite part of your wreath is the cursive Love that you added. Having this on your pantry door is place where you can really enjoy this for February and beyond.
Michelle Meyer says
The cursive Love is my favorite part too. I had a blast with this challenge and so happy to hop with you again!

Michelle, I love everything about your wreath. The blue and white puffy grain sack hearts (you knew I would love those!), the blue and white color and, most of all, the Love spelled out with the grapevine wire. You could leave it up all year. I love the country feel. Happy Valentine’s, my sweet friend.
Michelle Meyer says
Thank you Carol! Our ideas were so much alike for this challenge. Great minds, right?!
Christy @ Our Southern Home says
